Structured CST Interview Preparation You Can Trust

For the CST interview, success would not be guaranteed with knowledge alone. With two 15-minute online stations and roughly five minutes per question, candidates need to answer clearly and concisely, be able to prioritise and structure their thinking under time pressure. This resource helps you practise exactly that  right up to a fully graded, full-length AI mock under real timing.

Rather than a loose collection of questions, you get an organised preparation system built around how Core Surgical Training selection actually works. You will learn the common and high-yield themes, a framework to model your answer based on that scores, and the consistency that separates an average performance from a top-ranked one.

The interview matters because it carries most of your selection score.

What's Included

Everything is designed around the real station format, and written by surgeons who have been through CST national selection successfully.

Answer Frameworks

Repeatable frameworks for different station types. You will be able to tackle any unfamiliar questions with a structured answer.

Portfolio Station Preparation

Prepare for questions on your portfolio and evidence including audits, teaching, commitment to surgery. Answer questions without hesitation with a structure.

Updated for the Current Cycle

Scenarios, model answers and guidance are reviewed and updated each cycle, so what you practise matches the interview you will actually sit.

Model Answers

Clear worked answers for the scenarios you practise, so you can see exactly what a high-scoring response looks like.

Skills That Make the Difference

These are the same skills that satisfy the interview scoring domains. None of them come from passive practice alone. Knowing the answer and saying the answer are two different skills. For the interview, you will need to speak with the interviewers. Practising with the AI means you rehearse out loud, on the clock. That is the part of CST interview preparation that reading cannot give you.

Answer structure under time pressure Clear, prioritised responses inside the five-minute station limits.
Clinical and management prioritisation Demonstrate to the interviewers that you can triage and make decisions like a core surgical trainee.
Portfolio discussion and presentation confidence Speak about your CST portfolio and achievements with clarity, and be ready for the questions you will be asked in the interview.
Consistency across interview themes Perform reliably and with confidence at every station of the CST interview, not just your strongest one.

Yes. First-time applicants will benefit from the model answers and frameworks, while re-applicants tend to use the scenarios and model answers to improve on what they already know.

Yes. The scenarios are structured to support both self-study and paired interview practice.

There are two ways to use it. You can practise any single station with the AI for targeted learning, or sit the complete AI mock interview, which runs with the same station structure and timing as the real interview. The AI grades your performance at the end using a rubric similar to that of the real interview, giving you a useful benchmark before interview day.

It is held online and consists of two 15-minute stations: a management and clinical station, with one management and two clinical scenarios lasting around five minutes each, and a portfolio station, with a three-minute pre-prepared presentation followed by questions and then two five-minute questions on your portfolio domains.

In recent cycles, the two interview stations were worth 45% each and the MSRA 10%, meaning interview performance determined 90% of the selection score. Check the NHS England Medical Hub for the current cycle's arrangements.

Applications run through Oriel in the autumn. For 2026 entry, applications closed in November 2025, the MSRA ran in January, and interviews were held in early March 2026. Each new cycle's timetable appears on the NHS England Medical Hub in the autumn.

Question lists leave you to work out the method on your own. Here, the scenarios are organised by station type, the frameworks carry across questions, and the model answers show you the expected standard, with presentation and portfolio support included alongside them.

Surgeons who came through CST national selection themselves. The style and standard of the answers reflect what scored well.
